8,551 Miles, give or take a few, was how far we had to go to meet. By the grace of God we, Melissa and Ashlie, were called to serve with the Young Living Foundation and instantaneously knew we would be doing this thing called life together. Walking through the red clay, seeing the beauty in all the chaos, feeling the deep emotion of the Ugandan people, and falling in love with the meaning of service led us to begin Commanded To Go.
As we began the process of founding Commanded To Go, we brought in our dearest friends Carrie and Lisa to make this a reality. Lisa too has traveled and served alongside Melissa in Africa and we were so excited to bring her in as a partner! As friends, followers in Christ, and service-minded women we bring to you a place to seek out support in ministry work both locally and globally.
Here is a little about our founders.
“Hey! My name is Ashlie Hein and I am from Weatherford, Texas. I am married to the love of my life, Mike, and we have four amazing and beautiful children! I have been in education for the past 10 years. I hold my PhD in Curriculum and Instruction and love all things education. I have been actively involved in Young Living the past 4 years, leading me to Uganda, where I realized my true purpose in life….to serve. Education has always been a passion of mine and I am beyond thrilled that I can use my knowledge and skills to teach, equip, and empower others with the heart for service work. Teaching others how to rise from all the bad in the world, how to keep God closest in all things we do, how to love unconditionally, and more importantly the importance of education. I feel like my teaching career is just starting in a new capacity and I cannot wait to see where it takes me!”
Hey, Hey Friends!! My name is Melissa Askew and I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my eight children and my husband Nick. I enjoy photography, live music, travel, and speaking about topics near and dear to me. I have a heartbeat for short term missions, adoption, advocacy, serving and encouraging others.
I have always had a heart that longs to wander and explore. My soul often gets restless to jump on a plane and just GO! It wasn’t until last year while on a short term mission service trip to Uganda that I discovered why God made me this way. God spoke to me through the verse Joshua 1:9 just before we headed into the largest Slum in Africa. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” During this trip He placed in me the desire to go and share His love with others. He gave me a heart to wander after Him. He even commanded this from me from the very beginning. He taught me that this wasn’t a flaw in me but an intentional gift given so that I may serve Him well.
It was there on the red clay soil that I fell deeper in love with God and his heartbeat for all nations. He has called me to serve those He loves so deeply. He gave me eyes to see His people the way He sees them. He broke my heart for what breaks His and I will never be the same.
Commanded to Go was founded out of our desire to give others the opportunity to have similar experiences of seeing God at work in all tribes, tongues, and nations; as well as coming alongside full time missionaries to provide support, encouragement, and respite, as they dedicate each day of their lives to serving the Lord. I’m so thankful for this beautiful journey God has set me on and I can’t wait to watch it unfold as we seek to serve others.
Hey Guys! My name is Carrie Featherston and I am married to my best friend and rock, Jeff. We have two amazing kiddos, Zachary and Courtney! I was born and raised in Auburn, CA (a little suburb just east of Sacramento, CA). Our family was introduced to Young Living in September of 2014 and we have experienced so many changes in our home, relationships, family, and health that we cannot help but to shout it from the rooftops. While I have not personally had the opportunity to serve with the Young Living Foundation or any other mission trips, I am excited and feel so blessed to be apart of Commanded To Go, and am making it my mission to help others that dream of traveling and serving!
Hey! I am Lisa Cooley and I am so excited to be a part of Commanded To Go. I have always had a love of people and a desire to improve the lives of those in need. I am driven by helping others and my ability to serve. I have a degree in Human Development from the University of Colorado and have significant experience in coordinating events that benefit and empower others to serve. I am a single mother of an amazing daughter and have owned my own business for the past 15 years. I have worked most of my life with folks who need help because of memory loss, Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia’s. I am an organized and thoughtful leader in the Long-Term Care Community and have received several awards and achievements over the years. My passion in life has always been to serve others and create community in a Person-Centered Way, serving others centered on the choices of the person I am caring for. Colleagues know me as a fair and thoughtful, organized and team-oriented leader. I feel honored and blessed to be on this journey with Ashlie, Melissa and Carrie.
I am so humbled and proud to be a part of Commanded To Go! God created me to serve, bless, and help the world in many facets. My motivation and heart are so pure and so directed that I feel this path is perfect. One of my life goals is to pass and teach the love and compassion I have for the unseen and unheard to others and our children. I want to take others on Missions Trips and it is my prayer that when the attendees look upon the sad, homeless, mentally challenged, and aged as being God’s children and worthy of prayer and dignity they will then feel the fire to serve as I do! I am proud to have served with Ashlie, Melissa, and Carrie and cannot wait for you to join hands with us!
